Vendor Case Study: Datum Storage

More Space Needed to Grow

Montana Historical Society
Helena, Montana
Archival Storage

Established in 1865, the Montana Historical Society, the oldest institution of its kind in the West, is the guardian of Montana’s memory and serves as the state archives for state and local government records.

The vast collections of artifacts, photographs, oral accounts and documents serve as evidence of a storied and rich history.

The society’s archival shelving system accommodated over 35,000 linear feet of materials equivalent to 7 miles of file boxes lined end to end, but the inefficient layout and crowded storage area afforded limited access and threatened to damage valuable documents.

There became a growing need for an innovative, space-saving storage system to increase the capacity and security of the archive as well as offer greater protection from dust and debris.

“The addition of compact shelving to our archival storage space was a long-term goal for the Society.  It is easy to use, was customized to our needs, and maximized the odd layout of our space.  We were so happy with it, we ordered more for another space!” — Jodie Foley, Montana State Archivist Storage Solution

A custom MobileTrak® system was designed to meet strict archival storage specifications. The modern, heavy duty system is aesthetically pleasing with uniform shelving at consistent heights and depths.  Wider aisles allow easier and more efficient access to every item housed in the archive.

The MobileTrak® system was customized to fit the space and expanded capacity by over 40%.

Additionally, the system was installed with safety locks and seismic rails to ensure the security and preservation of Montana’s historical records.
